This Week in IT News #13 (11-11-09)

It looks like Apple, T-Mobile and others are taking up the news again lately. As usual, these are the stories I picked up over the last week that I feel are good enough to mention. As always, submit yours.

1.7 Million T-Mobile Subscribers Hit by Outage
T-Mobile just can’t seem to have a good month without staying out of the news. First was the fiasco with major data loss and now over a million users were without service. It’s not a great time to be a T-Mobile customer, that’s for sure.

GNOME 3.0 May Be Delayed
Personally I think getting GNOME 3.0 done by March is expecting a bit much, and apparently others agree. GNOME 3.0 may be slipped to next fall in order to make sure all of the components are finished in time.

Atom Support not Cancelled in Mac OSX Afterall
Earlier I reported that Apple was removing Intel Atom support from their latest update, though that appears to not be the case anymore. Who knows. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did block Intel Atom. (Update: It looks like I was right).

First iPhone Virus Released?
Reports are coming up all over the net about a supposed iPhone virus, that relies on the phone to be jailbroken in order to be affected. I’ve also heard that it relies on the password to be unchanged as well, maybe even SSH. Who knows. If you have Jailbroken your iPhone, perhaps you can just change your password?

Kindle for PC Released
In case you wanted DRM-riddened books on your PC, now is your chance! Kindle for PC has been released but I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet. If you have, what do you think about it?

Reiser4 File System a Possibility for inclusion in the Linux Kernel in 2010
Personally, I thought the Reiser file system was dead (no pun intended) for a while, but it appears that it’s been resurrected (again, no pun intended). There is a possibility it could land into the mainline Linux kernel in 2010.

GNOME 3.0 Definitely Delayed
I reported earlier in this very same post that GNOME 3.0 may be delayed, and later on it was confirmed. GNOME 2.30 will have some of the improvements of GNOME 3.0, with the rest held until next fall.
